Barney Gask joins Oakbank Racing Club Committee
Barney Gask is no stranger to the racetrack, and since he first attended the Oakbank Easter races as a grade nine student, he has not missed one. More than 20 years later, he has become a member of the Oakbank Racing Club committee. “I’m very excited to be involved in such an iconic South Australian event and to see it grow,” he says. Not only a keen supporter from the sidelines, through his wife, former jockey Cheree Buchiw, Barney has received a behind the scenes education in the sport. Barney says horse racing has become a big part of their lives and Cheree has been described as “an inspiration” to the club after her lower left leg was amputated following a racing accident in 2003. In 2005, she returned to the saddle with the aid of a prosthetic limb. On Saturday, March 13, both Barney and Cheree will attend the second annual Prelude Race Day, which was attended by close to 6,000 people in its inaugural year. Proceeds from the day will support Childhood Cancer. Oakbank will host its first Christmas Twilight race day on December 10.
